PILLARS OF ISLAM

Pillars of Islam

Islam is a religion that is based on some pillars that are fundamental to the spiritual and daily life of the Muslim. These are:

First pillar - The Testimony (al-Shahadah)

The first pillar consists of saying verbally, with sincerity in the heart, the following phrase: "There is no other divinity but God; Muhammad (S.A.A.S) is God's servant and messenger”.

Second pillar - Prayer (al-Salat)

Prayer is one of the most important pillars of Islam, and is practiced five times a day, at dawn, at noon, in the mid-afternoon, at sunset, and at night.

Third pillar - Zakat

(al-Zakat)

It consists in paying an amount of up to 2.5% of your capital each year to needy people. This act of charity is understood as a purification of the Muslim's material and spiritual life.

Fourth Pillar - Fasting

(al-Saum)

It is mandatory for every healthy Muslim, upon reaching the age of puberty, to fast in the month of Ramadan (ninth month of the lunar calendar), abstaining from eating, drinking, marital relations, and all evil deeds. Fasting should be done from dawn until sunset. It is a method of personal purification, which provides the fasting person with a conduct of patience, respect, and understanding. By depriving themselves of worldly comforts, even for a short period, the fasting person renews their faith.

Fifth pillar - The Pilgrimage

(al-Hajj)

This pillar consists of the visit that Muslims make to the holy city of Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, with the intention of performing a series of rituals during the days of pilgrimage. In the Hajj, pilgrims wear simple clothes that eliminate class and cultural distinctions; highlighting the equality of all before God.
